GRE standards or requirements for most universities are set at the departmental level, and average or minimum scores can vary widely within the same institution or even the same department. At Georgetown University, for example, students in the Department of Government's master of arts in democracy and government program received average GRE scores of 156 verbal, 156 quantitative, and 4.5 analytical writing. PhD students in this department received significantly higher mean scores of 165 verbal, 160 quantitative, and 5.2 analytical writing. GRE score expectations can be affected by subject matter. At Vanderbilt University, the mean GRE scores were 161 quantitative and 152 verbal for the graduate program in economic development, which is an obvious indication of the abilities required for this degree offering. For other disciplines, verbal skills are more important, such as the History Department at Duke University (averages of 165 verbal and 150 quantitative). Manhattan Review's GRE prep courses and private tutoring have helped students meet numerous distinct GRE requirements.
Students who prepare for the GRE with Manhattan Review are regularly accepted to graduate programs at highly selective institutions. Our GRE clients have been admitted to Oxford, the London School of Economics, Cambridge, King's College London, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania, the California Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon, Brown, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and many more. Meet a Bangkok GRE Tutor: Donovan S.
Donovan S., who is known as "Don" to his students, is originally from Boston, Massachusetts. He chose to stay in New England for his undergraduate studies, completing a bachelor's degree in chemistry at Brown University. Then it was off to graduate school at Boston University, where he finished his master's degree in education in just three semesters. His high GRE scores were a big help to his graduate school application (he scored in the top 1%).
Don began his GRE tutoring career in Boston in 2010, and he has been teaching GRE courses and individual tutoring in Bangkok since 2016. He splits his professional life between GRE instruction and a job with a Bangkok chemical manufacturer. His efforts as a GRE educator have helped nearly 500 students get accepted to graduate programs at universities in the United States, Canada, and several other countries.
